Monthly Meeting Recap – 9/23/12
Robot Show & Tell:
- Mike Dvorsky brought a few books he’s currently reading including Introduction to Autonomous Mobile Robots and Programming Computer Vision with Python.
- Dan Toborowski showed an Arduino project he’s been working on that involves controlling LEGO motors using the manufacturer’s IR wireless protocol. By doing this Dan can create all sorts of complex autonomous functionality with “stock” LEGO sets. Dan also showed a highlight video he put together from the recent IMTS (International Manufacturing Technology Show) which featured a very large collection of various industrial robots.
- Peter Campbell mentioned a few robotics news topics including the Makerbot’s announcement of the Replicator 2, release of a new low-cost industrial robot named Baxter that only costs $22,000, and an interesting TED talk titled “Are Droids Taking Our Jobs?“
- Curt Boirum brought several projects including a custom portable battery box, power supply adapter, and a HOG Wheel testbed built using MINDS-i building sets. Curt also discussed his FPV R/C aircraft project which we’re looking forward to seeing some videos from.
