Brawls & Boogaloos

CIRC has hosted some of the largest hobby robotics competitions in the country featuring RC Combat, autonomous Sumo, Line Following, and more. This page contains information about past & future Bot Brawls & Bot Boogaloos including pictures, video, competition results, and more.

In the past, CIRC held RC Combat and autonomous Sumo, Line Following, Line Maze Solving, and other events together. Due to increased interest in RC Combat, it was determined best to separate events into different competitions. The Bot Brawl will include Ant and Beetle RC Combat events. The Bot Boogaloo will include Sumo, Line Following, Line Maze Solving, Cone Stalking, Art Bot and other autonomous events. This split has been successful and makes each competition better.

Below you will find the most up-to-date rules for the various events that may be featured at our competitions. If you have any questions about the rules please contact our club officers or bring your question to one of our monthly meetings.

Bot Brawl 19

Bot Brawl 19 will be held on August 10, 2019 at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, IL. This event will once again be part of Ignite Peoria and the Midwest MakerFest. This is our fourth year of teaming up with these great groups and we are excited to be a part of it. The Midwest MakerFest is the largest MakerFest in the Midwest, and the Bot Brawl is one of the premier RC combat contests in the Midwest! There will be art & craft exhibits, dance performances, maker demonstrations, and maker exhibits going on all day long in addition to the Bot Brawl. This event is a great blend of all sorts of creative energies. Entry is free.

As of May 6th, registration is full for Bot Brawl 19. We will not be expanding the number of robots to compete. If you would like to be on our notification list, please contact Bruce Stott at president@circpeoria.org. I will notify people on the list if I notice any changes to registration. We can’t reserve spots. People drop out at all times of the day. I suggest that you monitor the registration at Builders Database. The filling of the vacant spots will be on a first come first served basis. Three spots are open for Beetleweight!!

Bot Brawl 19 will feature the following events:

  • Antweight (1 lb) RC Combat
  • Beetleweight (3 lb) RC Combat

Each event class is limited to 24 bots.
Rules for the events are available on our website, here. We encourage all competitors to ask questions beforehand that they have on the rules. This prevents competitors having to make rushed repairs on the day of the competition and/or getting disqualified. It is the competitors responsibility to know the rules. We will do our best to apprise people of changes made to rules, but we do not guarantee it. IMPORTANT: The rules were tweaked already this year regarding the size limit.

Maps and directions. Parking information is available here. We will be in Exhibit Hall C. Fulton parking lot works well. The Marquee parking lot works well also with a little bit more walking.

Competition Schedule:  Once the competition starts, we will do our best to maintain this schedule, but flexibility may be required.  It is all competitors responsibility to monitor the competition and be ready when it is their time to compete.

A BIG thanks to this year’s sponsors helping us to make Bot Brawl 19 more fun than it should be humanly possible!!

Bot Boogaloo Spring 2019

CIRC hosted a NEW robotics contest, Bot Boogaloo 19. It was held on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Illinois, in room 212/213 of the Academic Building. This was our first Bot Boogaloo. Here is a link to a map of the Academic Building. On this map, the room we used is marked 213b. There were signs directing people to the best way to get from parking to the room. Here is a link to parking. People used Lot V. Note that College Avenue is a one way road.

Currently we have a video of the entire event with no editing via our YouTube page. Highlight video of all events.

We served a light lunch to competitors and non-competitors. Snacks and drinks were available from vending machines. The campus cafeteria was closed.

We offered the opportunity for competitors to mail in entries for events, though no one took advantage of it. Here is a link to the form with details on how to mail in entries along with contact information if you have questions. Mail in entry form.

What was the Bot Boogaloo you ask? Well, it was a lot of fun and these were the events. Also listed are their respective rules. Two of the events were brand new.

Bot Brawl 18

Bot Brawl 18 was hosted on August 11, 2018 at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, IL.  This event was part of Ignite Peoria and the Midwest MakerFest.  This was our third year of teaming up with these great groups and we were delighted to be a part of it.  The Midwest MakerFest is the largest MakerFest in the Midwest, and the Bot Brawl is the largest hobby robotics contest in the Midwest!  There was art & craft exhibits, dance performances, maker demonstrations, and maker exhibits all day long in addition to the Bot Brawl.  This event was a great blend of all sorts of creative energies.

After some last minute drop outs and walk-ins we had 27 Ants and 21 Beetles compete in RC Combat.  The battles this year were more furious than ever with bot & battle box pieces flying everywhere while drivers exhibited great skill driving their creations.  Lots of people were cheering for their favorite bots.

Results are shown below as well as at Challonge.com/BotBrawl18Ant and Challonge.com/BotBrawl18Beetle.

Tournament results have been sent to BotRank.com‘s site so all contestants will be ranked against other bots in the robot fighting world.  I don’t know how long it takes for them to process the data.  Go to their site and see your rank at http://sparc.tools/BotRank/index.php   Note, this is not the same rankings as just typing BotRank.com into your browser window.  That will take you to a legacy site.  If you have questions, please email me, Bruce Stott, at president@circpeoria.org

Thanks to our sponsors AutonomouStuff, Servo magazine and Nuts & Volts magazine.  We could not have held such a great competition without them.  Thank you!

Bot Brawl 17 Results

Bot Brawl 17 was hosted on August 12, 2017 at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, IL.  This event was part of Ignite Peoria and the Midwest MakerFest.  The Midwest MakerFest is the largest MakerFest in the Midwest, and the Bot Brawl is the largest hobby robotics contest in the Midwest!  There were art exhibits, dance performances, maker demonstrations, and maker exhibits going on all day long in addition to the Bot Brawl.

The day was a success with 49 robots going at each other.  There were 20 Antweights and 14 Beetleweights competing.  A couple of robots had to drop out due to not passing safety inspections.  A few Beetleweights could not get ready in time and dropped out at the last moment.  The Mini (500g) Sumo event had 10 competitors that produced a few surprises with the upstarts taking on the veterans.  The Mega (3 kg) Sumo had only 2 competitors.  Two of the pre-registered robots ran into technical difficulties the night before and dropped out.  Still, the 2 entrants that were able to compete put on a good show.  The Line Following and Line Maze events were held as demonstrations due to a low number of entrants.  Checkers on a Sumo Ring had 3 competitors, with the victor upsetting last year’s champion.  The RC Combat Rumbles held at the end of the day were a great roar of fun.  The Antweight victor was chosen by audience applause since there were at least 6 bots still moving at the end of 4:00 minutes.  The Beetleweight victor was a surprise and left no doubt as to who was in charge of that rumble!
