Art Bot Rules for CIRC Bot Boogaloo
Purpose
The purpose of the Art Bot competition is to encourage the creation of robotic-themed art, or robots that have an artistic function.
The category is very broad, and may include things like
- Static displays that have a robotic theme
- Kinetic sculptures
- Robots that perform a function in an aesthetically appealing way
- Robots that perform no function at all, but are designed to entertain
- Robots that create art (through vision, sound, or other senses)
The list above is not intended to be comprehensive. Use your creativity.
Rules
Safety
The entries must not present a danger to the venue, spectators, or other competitors.
- No flame
- No projectiles
- No spray paint or other sources of noxious fumes
- Avoid sharp edges, pinch points, etc.
The contest organizers reserve the right to exclude any entry they deem unsafe. If in doubt, ask the contest organizers in advance.
Appropriateness
The entries must not have content that is inappropriate for a general audience, such as
- Overtly sexual content
- Content that is deliberately offensive to a segment of the population
While we do not wish to engage in censorship, we need to take into account that our spectators will be coming to see robots, and may include children. If you want to make a profound political statement, this is probably not the best venue.
The contest organizers reserve the right to exclude any entry they deem inappropriate. If in doubt, ask the contest organizers in advance.
Size and weight
The entry should fit in a cube 24 inches on a side at all times. This is not a hard and fast rule, but a strong recommendation. If your entry is larger than this, please contact the contest organizers in advance.
The entry should weigh no more than 20 pounds. This is not a hard and fast rule, but a strong recommendation. If your entry is heavier than this, please contact the contest organizers in advance.
We do not want to discourage creativity with these limits, but must have a plan for how to display the entries in the contest venue.
Judging
The judging will be based on
- The aesthetic value of the entry (or the art created by the entry, if applicable)
- The originality and creativity of the entry
- The entertainment value of the entry
- How well the entry fits the “robotic” theme
- The quality of construction of the entry (or the art created by the entry), if applicable
The competition will be judged by a team of at least three judges, with backgrounds in art and engineering. The judges will use a rubric based on the above criteria. Judges’ decisions will be final.
